Shark and Crocodiles

Publié le par Carole

Hi everyone,

We are still in Mazunte on the beach enjoying the sun and the sea. But we didn´t want our blog to get too boring so we managed to find some interesting things to say.

Yesterday morning as we were walking on the beach to reach our spot, we saw some fishermen gathered next to their boat and a huge fish. My first thought was that it must be a dolphin as we were told that they are loads of them. However, getting nearer, we got to realise it was nothing less than a shark. It got caught in their nets. By the time we reached the scene, they had already emptied the fish, cut its head and were about to carry it with two wooden sticks thrusted into the animal´s skin. Hum.... There were loads of small fishes on the sand and I realised there were 12 baby sharks lying headless. David was willing to get one of the shark´s tooth. So we waited till one of the guys got rid of all the flesh around the teeth. I won´t give too many details but apparently it ain´t easy to get a tooth when the flesh is still fresh. Anyway, the fisherman got nearer and nearer to the gum with his knife and there was one point when he hit too close to one of the teeth which accidently broke. So David got his shark´s tooth. Can´t say it´s not a real one. People who know me will understand I felt sorry for witnessing this scene as the babies would have been born within a few days and it was like killing 13 sharks in total. But I must also say that I wouldn´t have gone swimming with the seaturtles knowing that there were sharks around.... brrrr.... gives me goosebumps.

The rest of the day would be too boring for you to read. Just sunbathing, eating, swimming (Camille and Blogtrotteuse, this message is for you: I can swim, I just get tired very quickly. Ask Hélène and she´ll tell you).

Today we were up just too late to watch the sunrise. We missed it by 10 minutes so we shall try harder tomorrow morning. No shark this time when walking towards our spot. Just the usual swimming, sunbathing and reading. From 12:00pm to 3:30pm we do our best to avoid the sun as we want to stay here for a few more days and not get burnt, not being able to bear the sunrays after that. So today we went to do a new excursion to see some crocodiles! The Lonely Planet referred to some lagoon not far from our beach full of mangroves and wildlife. We were only two on a small boat along with our guide. With our luck, we thought we wouldn´t see any crocodile. But we did. A big one hidden behind some trees and a baby one (two years old). There were also some iguanas and a few birds. That was all. But it was good to be there. Felt like being on the Amazon as if we had traveled to a new country. The lagoon is very close to the beach so everytime the tide is high, the sea and the lagoon merge into one big ocean and crocodiles go into the sea! The guide told us there has never been any accident at all. Next thing we saw a lonely guy paddling in his boat with his legs inside the water. Thought he was crazy. Because we only saw two crocodiles and the first one being near the start of the tour, on our way back, the guide got as close as he could in order to scare it and we got to see it dive into the water. It was huge. Was 20 years old according to the guide.

There seems to be a problem with the server of overblog and I can´t add any pic. We will come back in the morning to do so. G´night.
