Arequipa, the white.
Hello there,
Hope ye all feeling good. So what´s the big plan for tomorrow night? Some binge drinking? As for us, we don´t know yet... might go to some local oasis.
Right, so Arequipa is where we are now; the second largest city in Peru. It is
known by the ´white-city´ coming from the sillar walls chopped from the nearby volcanos. We got to the bus station at 6.00am at where some woman offered us a room in a central three-star hotel for 15 euros. The best place we have stayed so far. In the afternoon, we visited the city and its monastery called Santa Catalina in which the richest nuns used to have up to 4 slaves. I didn´t know nuns could have some slaves! We were tired pretty quickly and by 5pm we were already in bed watching the cable.
Today we went for some traditional food: corn soup and then alpaca roasted on a stone. Everything with a wooden spoon. Hum, that was different. In the afternoon, we had booked a tour of the city. We were
supposed to go on a tourist bus but ended up in a taxi with a private guide. That was great. Went to different seepoints from where we could gaze at the three volcanos surrounding the city, then to some churches, a water-mill and finally we went to see a bull. Why is that? Bull fighting is very popular here and tomorrow there is a big encounter.
Also got to know about the peruvian way of celebrating New Year´s Eve. Similar to Spaniards, Peruvian eat 12 grapes one on each chime of the clock. They also offer presents for New Year´s Eve such as underwear. You have three colors: red, yellow and green. Respectively for love, money and compassion. One who wants to travel would run around the main square with a piece of luggage on New Year´s Eve. By the way, that what we did last year. And look at us, it worked!
At 8:30pm we will leave Arequipa and should reach Ica tomorrow at 6:00am. No stop in Nazca to see the lines. Bye for now!
