The Yucatán peninsula
Hey guys,
Last time we uptdated the blog in English was a few days ago after visiting Chichen Itza. Since then, we have been to the nice city of Mérida where we met a Paddy. We spent most of our time with him playing cards or visiting the city. The following day we went together to the Mayan ruins of Uxmal. Even had time to have a quick glimpse of Mérida´s Zoo. I was amazed at seeing some species I had never came across anywhere before. Sorry blog trotteuse pics of the jaguar cubs would have been of very poor quality. I didn´t take any at all.
From Mérida, we took a 3-hour bus to Campeche. Our hostel was right on the main square in an old house. The view was just great over the cathedral. We wandered a bit through this World Heritage Site claimed by Unesco. True enough streets are very enjoyable with their houses of different colours. It also has various defensive walls (nothing comparable to Vannes). But the main attraction to us was the seafront walk where we stayed two hours sunbathing. Unfortunately there isn´t any beach so we had to sit on the sidewalk and watch the pelicans. They were looking for Nemo...
When heading back to our hostel, we found the main square getting agitated a bit. It turned out that every Saturday and Sunday, locals organise stalls selling homemade food and bingo is on too. There was also an orchestra playing El Condor Pasa. Thought we were back to Peru for a while. It was grand to go from one stand to the next having some homemade spaghetti and canelones. Very mexican indeed.
This morning we went for a last spin to the seafront and catched an eleven-o´clock-bus to Palenque. The 6-hour ride to the Chiapas went pretty fast watching movies and reading. They showed us the lastest Zorro twice just in case we didn´t get everything the first time. We will only spend one night here. Our hostel sold us a package for tomorrow including ruins´ visit, waterfalls and the bus to San Christobal de Las Casas. See you there!
