you can go down to Mexico !
Hi everyone, as you may already know we´re in Mexico (the country, not the city). We landed in Cancún on the 6th of January and we did not stay there long as it is too touristy. Our first surprise was that it was a bit more expensive than South America, although still much cheaper than Europe, and the beaches were almost all private with huge five-star hotels all along the coast. If you stay in such a hotel it must be great but we were in Cancún downtown, in a dorm and we had to get a bus to reach the coast and sneak in a hotel to get to the beach. Not really my cup of tea. So, on the 7th we took a bus to Tulum.
We found a hut on the beach and were sleeping in hammocks for 3 days. The beach was great : white sand, sun, the sea was blue with nice waves...a paradise. The problem was that the sunset was at 17h30 and we had no electricity in the hut. No other options than going to bed, well...going to hammock. As it was a wooden hut, the mosquitoes could get in easily and feed on us all night. On the 4th day, the clouds arrived, it started raining and we were already fed up of being mosquitoe food, we took a bus to Chichén Itzá. Chichén Itzá is a famous Maya site with pyramids and temples fairly well preserved. Yesterday we went to the site for a night show with lights and traditional music. It was brilliant ! They were telling the story of the Mayas and the Toltecs who invaded them later on, with all the human sacrifices, wars and games they had. Today, we visited the same site in daytime. It´s much different, I must say. It´s crowded with american tourists and without the lights, the ruins look like...ruins. But it´s still very impressive and once again I felt really lucky to be able to see that for real. This afternoon we hopped on a bus to Merida. We haven´t seen much of this city yet but found a good youth hostel and had some spicy mexican food. Tomorrow we´ll go on a city tour. I´ll tell you about that later. Hasta luego !
