Peninsula Valdes

Hi ye,

Had a great day today observing wildlife. We booked a tour through the hostel to go to the Peninsula  Valdes which is about 80km from the coast. We were a group of 13 people in a small coach and started off early. First to an information centre where lied a squeleton of a two-year old whale calf. Outside we could see the island which inspired Saint Exupery in ´The Little Prince´. The main character describe it as an elephant swollen in a boa or as a hat. If your inner child still dwells in you, then you will be able to see the elephant inside the snake.  To be honest with you, it took me 5 minutes to be able to spot the island. I couldn´t see the snake nor the hat, just some piece of land. Yeah, I am getting old.

In Puerto Pirámide, which is the island´s capital, we climbed on top of a boat pulled by a tractor that drove  us into the Golfo Nuevo. Every year, huge numbers of whales come here to have babies and breed them. So we watched many whales and their calves. There were so many of them everywhere.

Got back on to the coach and on the way to Punta Cantor, our eyes caught some guanacos (lama family) and choiques (ostrich family). We walked along the coast and obsvered some elephant-seals and their babies. Forgot to mention pinguins. They were so cute.

Last stop, Punta Norte. 35 orcas live in the Peninsula Valdes all year round, but today, none came to say hello. Orcas living here are known worldwide because they are the only orcas coming onto the beach to snatch elephant-seals or sea-lions.

Back to the parking of the Punta Norte, we ´played´ with the local dog: armadillo. . Very friendly.

Forgot to mention that today we were surrounded by French people. You go to the very far East of Patagonia and all you see around you are frogs! Unreal!
